Wall Lamps 101
Who isn't familiar with the gut-wrenching feeling of accidentally shattering a favorite lamp? With large bases and cords that get in the way, traditional table lamps can be short lived in high-traffic areas, especially in homes with children or pets.
Enter the wall lamp, an innovative sconce that offers the same great task lighting as a regular lamp without the hassle of cords or threat of breaking. Wall lamps usually have highly customizable features, whether it's a swing arm or flexible "gooseneck" that allows you to adjust the position of the light.
Wall lamps are also very easy to install, much to the joy of the average homeowner looking for a simple update. Typically, wall lamps are not hardwired. You can actually plug them into an electrical outlet, pin them to the wall, and hide the cord with a decorative cord cover (usually supplied). Therefore, they are a wonderful and simple addition to any room. Here are some ideas:
- Above Your Nightstand(s). Install a wall lamp on either side of your bed for a perfect late night reading solution. Many have 3-way switches to allow you to adjust the brightness, which is perfect if you're trying to finish that last chapter without disturbing your partner.
- Kids Rooms. Whether it is a nursery or teen's room, wall lamps are great for adding useful task lighting. They are especially handy here, because teens and kids tend to be a bit clumsy.
- Your Favorite Reading Nook. Cozy up to the morning paper in the same spot each morning? A wall lamp beside your chair could add the perfect touch of comfort, and make reading easier on your eyes. It's extra helpful to have an adjustable wall lamp here.
- Beside Your Desk. Swap your desk lamp for a wall lamp over or beside the desk, and you'll free up some much-needed desk space and reduce clutter! Plus, with an adjustable neck wall lamp, you can focus the light right where you need it.
