How to Install a Light Fixture

The process starts with asking the right questions before you purchase, so that when your light fixture arrives the installation process goes smoothly. For the best results, know the following before you buy.

You'll want to be sure you install any hanging light fixture at the right height for the best results. Hanging lights typically come with about 8 feet of wire and chain, but this amount varies among manufacturers.

As a rule of thumb, a chandelier or pendant should hang about 30 inches above your table.

You may want to measure either the existing hole (if you're replacing a fixture) or the new junction box (for new fixtures) before you make a decision.

  • How much does this fixture weigh? If you are replacing an existing fixture (and don't want to bother with purchasing/ installing a new junction box), try to choose a new one that weighs about the same.

  • Line Voltage or Low Voltage? Most fixtures are line voltage, but some (especially track lighting and under cabinet lights) are low voltage, and require you to purchase a transformer.
