Chandelier Lighting 101
 

Because of their rich history and lavish nature, chandeliers are the classic home lighting option. Chandelier lighting is a fascinating display of "functional art," and chandelier designs throughout the ages reflect a great deal about the times.

From the time cave dwelling men lit a branch from a central fire and held it overhead, it was apparent that light from above was more effective and appealing. With that perception of overhead lighting, the concept of chandelier lighting was born.

The earliest chandeliers, of course, were lit by candles. Even without today's technology, early chandelier lighting designs were often lavish and beautiful; ancient Egyptians were known to have produced carved alabaster chandeliers and even colored glass!

Chandelier lighting designs of medieval and Renaissance Europe signified royalty. Simple round forged iron designs called "coronas" adorned gothic castles, cathedrals, and dwellings; these designs are still copied today because of their rustic beauty.

The simple corona chandelier designs soon gave way to elaborate pieces flaunting religious figurines, fine materials (like crystal, gold and bronze), or colorful blown glass. Come the mid-20th Century, these lavish designs gave way to a simpler "form follows function" philosophy in all forms of art. Influences from every historical period can be found in the chandelier lighting designs of today, so there is truly an option for every personality!
